Bronze investment casting, also called the lost wax process, is a precise method for creating intricate metal forms. The technique demands building a wax model of the desired part, surrounding it with a ceramic or clay shell (the investment), then melting the wax to produce a hollow. Main Steps in Siddhalaxmi's Bronze Casting Process
Model Creation
Our casting procedure starts by making a detailed replica of the specific part using materials like clay, wax, or resin compounds. This model serves as a template, capturing small features that will be exactly reproduced in the final bronze item.
Mold Making
We coat the original model with a flexible material (such as silicone) to form a detailed mold. It is then supported by a rigid outer shell, often made from plaster or a similar material, to maintain the mold’s shape during casting.
Wax Casting
Hot wax is poured into the mold to produce a hollow replica of the original model. This wax copy is carefully removed, and any imperfections are corrected by hand.
Spruing and Gating
Wax sprues (channels) and vents are attached to the wax model. These create pathways for molten bronze to flow in and air to escape during casting.
Investment and Burnout
The wax models with sprues get coated, layering investment materials—usually ceramic or plaster- forming a hard shell. After setting everything up, you’d heat the whole thing in a kiln so the wax melts away and leaves a hollow cavity shaped like you desire.
Bronze Pouring
Molten bronze is poured into the preheated investment mold, filling the cavity left by the wax. The bronze is allowed to cool and solidify.
Shell Removal and Finishing
After cooling, the investment shell is carefully broken to reveal the rough bronze casting. Sprues and vents are cut off, and the surface is cleaned, chased, and polished. Any sections cast separately are welded together and finished to match the original design.
Patina and Final Touches
The bronze surface is treated with chemicals and heat for the desired patina (color and finish). The completed part is then waxed or lacquered for protection.
